To register as a new patient at our practice, Ann (our receptionist) will ask for your personal details including your address, date of birth and contact telephone numbers.  It would be helpful for us to have a note of your mobile phone number so we can send you a text message to remind you of your appointment time.

Please remember to tell Ann if you change your address or phone number so that we can keep our records up to date.

Our dentists at the practice are Catherine Jones, Morven Swan and Claire McGlone.  If you have a preference about which dentist you would like to register with, please tell us and we will be happy to arrange this for you.

If you are a nervous patient, please tell us.  One of our nurses, Linda is very good at helping anxious patients to relax and overcome their fear of the dentist.  She will listen to any concerns you have and will come up with ways of helping you.  She can also explain treatments in a language that is easy to understand.  When you feel ready, we can then arrange an appointment with one of the dentists, where Linda can be your nurse to provide a familiar face.

All three of our dentists are very sympathetic and understanding towards anxious patients.  We also offer a sedation service to help very nervous patients.

We have two hygienists at the practice, Pamela McMillan and Eleanor Rice, and once you have attended for an examination, your dentist will refer you to Eleanor or Pamela to have your teeth cleaned and polished.  They will also show you how to keep your teeth clean at home.

Two of our nurses, Allison and Debbie are trained as oral health and nutrition promoters as part of the nationwide childsmile programme.  Allison and Debbie will be delighted to arrange an appointment with you and your child to discuss diet and toothbrushing etc.  At the Belhaven Dental Surgery, we feel that prevention is a vital part of your dental care.

To stay as a registered patient at our practice, we will invite you to attend for regular 6 monthly examinations.  We invite children to attend the practice every 3 months, so they can get them used to visiting the dental surgery and so we can spot any problems early on.

If you have any queries, please call us on (01475) 741186.

We look forward to welcoming you as a patient at the Belhaven Dental Surgery!

Dental Examinations

As a new patient to the Belhaven Dental Surgery, you will be invited to attend for a dental examination.

What is it?

A dental examination shows how healthy your mouth is.  After an examination, you and your dentist can discuss the best way to deal with any problems.

What will my dentist do?

The dentist will ask you to fill in a medical history form.  It is important for your dentist to know what medical conditions you have and what medicines you take as these can affect your dental treatment.  We will ask you to fill in a new medical history form every year.

Your dentist will ask you:

  • Why you’ve come for an examination
  • Any problems you’ve noticed, such as pain or sensitivity
  • About your diet (because sugary snacks and drinks can cause tooth decay)
  • How you clean your teeth
  • About your tobacco and alcohol intake

(Some of these questions will depend on what your dentist sees in your mouth)

You should expect your dentist to:

  • Look at your face and neck to make sure they are healthy.
  • Look inside your mouth, at your tongue, your cheeks and lips, the roof of your mouth and the back of your throat.  They will also carry out a check for signs of mouth cancer.
  • Chart which teeth are present and which ones are missing.
  • Look at your teeth and gums to see whether they are healthy or if there are signs of decay, damage or gum disease.
  • Take X-rays (if necessary)
  • Tell you about any treatment you need, explaining the choices.
  • Provide you with an estimate of how much the treatment will cost

Your first examination will take longer than follow up examinations.
Even if you have dentures, it is important for you to attend for regular examinations to have your mouth checked to make sure it is healthy.

We will invite you to attend the practice for regular six monthly examinations.  We invite children to attend the practice every three months, so they can get them used to visiting the dental surgery and so we can spot any problems early on.
